TdGA 2021 ON GOOGLE MAPS
For all Google Maps users out there: on this page all routes for the Tour des Grandes Alpes 2021 are published, especially for you :-). Below, you’ll find the Google Maps navigation links as well as Google Maps overview maps of the routes.
1. GOOGLE MAPS ROUTES FOR NAVIGATION
1.1 General
Please make sure to check for every route if the ‘avoid motorways’ box is ticked under ‘Options’ in Google Maps. If it isn’t, please check that box. There’s one exception: if, on DAY 7, we need to take the alternative route via the Mont Blanc Tunnel (see below), the ‘avoid motorways’ box shouldn’t be ticked. These settings should be automatically set in the routes below, but it’s better to double check.
For DAY 3 we have planned both a shorter and a longer run. Pick the one you like. For DAY 7 you’ll find three different routes: the original and two alternatives. This is due to the Tour de France arriving in the same area on the same date as we are. This means some roads will be closed down. When the routes were planned, it wasn’t clear yet which roads will be closed. During the briefing at the end of DAY 6 we will let you know which route to use (chances are we have to plan a third alternative, which ill be published in this page).
1.2 Quick start guide
Before you start driving, click on the link below that matches the route of that day. If you are on or close enough to the starting point, or on the route already, Google Maps will show a ‘START’ button. Hit that and have fun. If you’re not close enough to the starting point, Google Maps will show an ‘EXAMPLE’ button. Drive closer to the starting point and this button will be replaced by the ‘START’ button.
To make sure Google Maps users drive the same routes as users of TomTom, Garmin, Osmand and what-have-you-apps, approximately 10 ‘stops’ have been added to each route. Google Maps treats these ‘legs’ as separate routes. When you’ve reached a ‘stop’, a button appears for starting your route to the next stop. You need to push that button in order to keep on navigating. This is typical Google Maps sillyness, and it should make you decide, sooner or later, to change to a proper navigation device / app, one that’s fit for driving multiple day tours ;-).
